How long can water stay in my Berkey system before I need to replace it?

It is recommended that you replace your Berkey water after three days. For water that is in a cold environment, the water can keep for up to one week. We make this recommendation based on our experience, the manufacturer’s information, and to ensure your safety. This is a conservative estimate for caution. The reason for this is because when you filter your water, the chemicals that inhibit bacteria growth are removed. In more humid environments, bacteria growth can occur more quickly.

How long can Berkey water be stored and what is the best method?

The length of storage depends on the treatment used on the water. The Berkey Biofilm Drops allow water to be stored for up to 5 years! For long-term water storage, it is recommended to use 16 drops (1/2 tablespoon) of chlorinated bleach per gallon of water. Both treatments will inhibit bacteria growth. Once you are ready to use the water, purify it by using your Berkey system.

For ideal lifespan on your water storage. we recommend using sterilized glass containers where feasible/possible. Also, your water should be stored in a cool and dry place.
